UC Berkeley Hildebrand Hall HVAC Modernization

Six story laboratory building at UC Berkeley. The renovation project includes the conversion of the building's existing HVAC system from constant volume to variable air volume. Alter Consulting Engineers served as mechanical and controls engineer of record for the renovation project. The mechanical scope of work included design, specifications, and documentation for the conversion of the laboratory building's existing HVAC system from constant volume to variable air volume. This included adding venturi supply and exhaust valves, as well as converting the existing constant volume fume hoods to variable air volume hoods. The controls renovation included the conversion of the building's decentralized control system to the campus standardized central ALC control system. The renovation project is expected to reduce the buildings annual energy use by as much as 25%.

OUSD Claremont Multi Purpose Building

New multipurpose building with adjoining all electric kitchen, under construction on Oakland Unified School District's Claremont Middle School campus. Alter Consulting Engineers provided mechanical, plumbing, and building controls engineer of record services. The new building will include: in-slab radiant tubing for heating/cooling, a central dedicated outdoor air handler for ventilation, mechanically actuated windows, an all electric kitchen, and a CO2 based domestic hot water system. The building is centrally heated and cooled by an air-to-water heat pump which circulates hot or cold water through the building's in-slab radiant tubing. Electronically actuated windows are operated by the BMS to enable natural ventilation, free cooling, and night flush. The building's new HVAC, natural ventilation, and electrical energy monitoring systems have been designed to integrate into the districts existing facilities energy management system.

Laney College Theater Renovation

Major renovation of an existing 4 story Theater and classroom building on Laney College's Campus in Oakland, California. Alter Consulting Engineers served as mechanical, plumbing, and controls engineer of record for the renovation project. The mechanical scope of work included design, specification, and documentation for the conversion of the building's existing HVAC system from constant volume to variable air volume. This included replacing the buildings air handler and converting the distribution system from constant volume to variable air volume. The controls renovation included the conversion of the building's decentralized control system to the campus standardized central control system. The renovation project is expected to reduce the buildings annual energy use by 20%.

LBNL Building 84 Electrification

Persistent entrainment of combustion exhaust at LBNL’s Building 84 resulted in a desire to electrify building 84's HVAC and Plumbing systems.

Alter compiled a team of design professionals and issued a report summarizing the evaluation of (qty.3) potential site locations for a new electric air-to-water heat pump plant.

The report included electrical, mechanical, plumbing, civil, structural, and cost analysis of each option.

Laney College Library and Learning Resource Center

The Laney College Library and Learning Resource Center (LRC) is a new library and classroom building at the Laney College campus in Downtown Oakland. The building was designed to incorporate very high performance glazing and extensive shading to maintain solar control. The Dual Duct HVAC system eliminates reheat. The project coincided with a campus central plant retrofit with new high performance chillers and boilers.

The building is all-electric at the site. The building was designed to allow the use of lower temperature heating hot water that can be produced by electric heat pumps, ensuring compatibility with future campus central plant electrification efforts.

Alter Consulting Engineers provided energy modeling services for the building, guiding the selection of glazing and shading during schematic design, as well as tracking the expected energy performance for metrics such as LEED, Title 24, and Architecture 2030. The project is pursuing a LEED Platinum certification, and is designed to achieve a 15% energy reduction from 2019 Title 24, Part 6.

Campbell Library Renovation

Major renovation of the City of Campbell's main downtown library.

Alter Consulting Engineers serves as project mechanical, plumbing and controls engineer of record. The library includes two levels, each conditioned by the building's two central air handling units.

The overall heating energy use of the building should drop by nearly 50% due to the new zoned HVAC system, new condensing boiler, and new T24 minimally compliant envelope.

The building's new HVAC and electrical energy monitoring systems have been designed to integrate into the City's existing facilities energy management system

Downtown Santa Cruz Library Mixed Use Building

New development for the city of Santa Cruz includes: a new construction library, multifamily housing, commercial space, and parking garage Located in downtown Santa Cruz.

Alter Consulting Engineers serves as project mechanical, plumbing and controls engineer of record for the library portion of the new building. The library will be conditioned by a hydronic perimeter system and a displacement ventilation system serving interior zones. Both systems source heating and cooling from a library dedicated four-pipe, heat recovery, air-to-water heat pump.

In addition the building will feature electronically actuated operable windows to enable natural ventilation and free cooling. The building's new HVAC, natural ventilation, and electrical energy monitoring systems have been designed to integrate into the City's existing facilities energy management system.

The library has been designed to operate as a zero net energy building, all annual library site energy use will be offset by the libraries new rooftop PV system.
