Laney College Library and Learning Resource Center

The Laney College Library and Learning Resource Center (LRC) is a new library and classroom building at the Laney College campus in Downtown Oakland. The building was designed to incorporate very high performance glazing and extensive shading to maintain solar control. The Dual Duct HVAC system eliminates reheat. The project coincided with a campus central plant retrofit with new high performance chillers and boilers.

The building is all-electric at the site. The building was designed to allow the use of lower temperature heating hot water that can be produced by electric heat pumps, ensuring compatibility with future campus central plant electrification efforts.

Alter Consulting Engineers provided energy modeling services for the building, guiding the selection of glazing and shading during schematic design, as well as tracking the expected energy performance for metrics such as LEED, Title 24, and Architecture 2030. The project is pursuing a LEED Platinum certification, and is designed to achieve a 15% energy reduction from 2019 Title 24, Part 6.
